So you think Pintail Lodge and its hunts sound too good to be true? Here are questions from our recent guests.
Why so many ducks in the Pintail Lodge area? The Laguna Madre lies at the convergence of the three primary flyways and contains a great concentration of waterfowl with an amazing depth and variety of species. The abundant food source on the laguna combined with the easy access to fresh water sources provide an ideal winter roosting ground for the ducks. The eel and shoal grass that grows in the laguna in front of our lodges provide an abundant food source. Ducks also feed on the snails and shrimp that are so plentiful here. Nowhere in North America will you find a more phenomenal location for waterfowl hunting than Pintail Lodge.
Why do duck hunters come to Pintail Lodge (and then come back every year)? It’s simple: excellent guides who make duck hunting so easy, expert calling, choice of duck blinds, knowledge of the laguna, and placement of duck decoys. All our hunters need to do is lift their guns and shoot. This alone makes Pintail Lodge one of the most unique duck hunting opportunities in the world. Equally important, we consistently have access to freshwater ponds where ducks come to drink twice a day. With rotation between the saltwater hunts on the laguna and freshwater hunts on the ponds and lakes, a Pintail Lodge duck hunt is never boring.
How do you provide such great food? No one ever walks away from the Pintail Lodge dinner table hungry. Another key to our success is the excellent gourmet food that we are able to provide. All pastries and pies are made on site. Fresh produce is brought over from the states. Perennial favorites include goose medallions and duck kabobs. With our excellent recipes and gourmet cooks, we make a lot of people who normally don t like wild game into wild game lovers. The opportunity we give the client to sample wild game will change their mind into bringing game home.
How are the shotguns at Pintail Lodge? Pintail Lodge’s gun-cleaning program ensures quality-working equipment. We have a new cleaning sprayer and shotguns are cleaned twice a day. Two full time shotgun cleaners are employed to ensure few chances of gun failure or jam.
Transportation/Boats At Pintail Lodge, we always work to cut time and distance between the lodge and the hunt. Our new location is the culmination of our efforts. Guests are now just moments away from the best hunting region on the Laguna.
What can I do besides duck hunting? In addition to the fine hunts along the Laguna, Pintail Lodge offers dove, quail and goose hunts. To provide exceptional quail and dove opportunities, we have a wildlife management program that this year includes an increase in our sorghum and sunflower fields.
Q. How are guns handled at Pintail Lodge?
A. This year we have new Benelli and Beretta 12 and 20 gauge shotguns available. - Anyone bringing guns will have to pay $300 for a Mexico Gun Permit. This permit allows up to two guns. IMPORTANT: If bringing your own guns, you must submit your paperwork at least 45 days prior to your travel date.
Q. What species are found when hunting at Pintail Lodge?
A. Ducks hunted at Pintail Lodge include: Redhead, pintail, widgeon, bluewing teal, greenwing teal, cinnamon teal, shoveler, gadwall and bluebill to name a few. Geese hunted at Pintail Lodge include: Snows and blues, speckle bellies, a few lesser Canadian Geese. A normal ratio for a hunt is 60% snows & blues and 40% specks. Early in the season, a hunter may see more specks. Bobwhite Quail may also be hunted at Pintail Lodge.
Q. What if I want to bring birds back from the hunt?
A. Guests may want to bring birds back into the United States for consumption or taxidermy. U.S. Fish and Wildlife requires that each person personally carry their own game across the border. If you plan to take home game for consumption, there is a U.S. Fish and Wildlife form that needs to be filled out. These forms are available at the lodge and we will assist you in filling them out.
Q. What if I want to bring birds back from the hunt for Taxidermy?
A. For taxidermy, U.S. Fish and Wildlife requires each person to have a licensed, quarantine taxidermy establishment certified by the USDA. This establishment must be registered and noted on the hunter s paperwork.
Pintail Lodge Clients Please Note: We work to make these processes as hassle free as possible. Birds are cleaned and packaged at the lodge. Coolers are available at the lodge to make transportation easier. As always, we are able to assist you when filling out all required forms and paperwork.
